O anúncio de lançamento foi feito em 29 de Novembro de 2021.
"CUPS 2.4.0 é a versão mais recente do OpenPrinting CUPS estável. Entre as mudanças do beta e do candidato a lançamento, o lançamento estável adiciona duas novas opções de configuração para otimizar a configuração do cupsd nos servidores e várias outras mudanças."
Segundo os desenvolvedores do CUPS os destaques desse lançamento são:
- Adicionada opção de configuração –with-idle-exit-timeout.
- Adicionada a opção de configuração –with-systemd-timeoutstartsec.
- DigestOptions agora são aplicadas para autenticação MD5 Digest.
- Compilação corrigida no Solaris.
- Traduções para o alemão corrigidas e aprimorada.

Essa é na minha opinião a união perfeita, o Gutenprint é uma vasta coleção de drivers open source para varias marcas de impressoras.

- Lexmark
- PCL laser printers
- Fujifilm
- Sony
- Olympus
E não são só essas a lista de impressoras suportadas é enorme, confira na gif abaixo.
Eu em particular não utilizo driver proprietário para impressoras no meu sistema, além de serem abertos temos a comodidade de não precisar sair caçando deriver no fabricante da impressora.
Caso queira deixar a sua distribuição com suporte as impressoras listadas na gif acima, instale com o comando correspondente a sua distribuição.
Para Arch Linux e Manjaro

Os demais são do AUR.

No meu caso que utilizo impressoras Epson, veja a quantidade de impressoras suportadas.
Terminal informa que tenho a última versão de todos os pacotes, preparados para instalar manualmente. Ex.: printer-driver-gutenprint is already the newest version (5.3.1-7).
